St. Monica

When it comes to saints as a Catholic, we have so many to look to for an intercession

with our prayers. St. Monica is one of the many saints. She had struggles as we all do but she

dealt with them with much admiration. St. Monica's feast day is August 27 and the patron saint

for those struggling with marital problems, the verbally abused and infidelity, those who have

fallen from the faith and alcoholics.

Monica was born in Tagaste, Northern America in 332 and was raised by Christian

parents and a maid. Monica developed a drinking problem at a young age when getting her

parents wine from the cellar. She would pour herself a glass until she was discovered by her

maid which led to her finding God and then being Baptized.

She married a pagan by the name of Patricius and they lived with his mother. Patricius

had a violent temper and was unfaithful but Monica remained dignified through it all. They

remained married and she never talked ill of her husband. She was patient and prayed which

eventually led to her husband and mother-in-law's conversion about a year before Patricius

passed away. Monica was the mother of three children, Augustine who lives a life of fame,

wealth and worldly desires before becoming a saint himself. Navigius who becomes a monk and

a daughter who becomes a nun. Augustine brought his mother much despair for whom she

prayed and shed many tears. She followed him to Rome where she continued prayers that led

to his baptism into Christianity.

Saints are people who have lived virtuous lives and are honored and respected for God

to work through. St. Monica is a great saint for her patience and persistence of prayer. If you

find a saint that you can relate to, ask them for prayers.
